Woman Dies After Butt Lift Procedure In Miami

A woman passed away Tuesday (September 15) following a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Miami, NBC Miami reported on Thursday (September 17).

Gia Romulado Rodriguez died of a fat embolism, according to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office.

During a butt lift procedure, fat is removed from one area of the body and injected in one's bottom to make it fuller. If the fat gets in a blood vessel, it can cause death.

NBC Miami said the 46-year-old woman traveled from New York to Miami for the cosmetic procedure this week.

The Mayo Clinic said doctors may caution patients against a butt lift if you have certain conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes or a history of smoking. Officials did not reveal if Rodriguez had pre-existing conditions.

"NBC 6 Investigators have found some 15 women have died of [butt lifts] in South Florida over the last several years," according to the website.

The last time the outlet reported on someone getting injured from a butt lift was in August 2019. A 35-year-old woman named Dawn traveled from Kentucky to Miami for the procedure on July 23, 2019.

Her mother, Rose Bumphus, said her daughter was hospitalized two days after the surgery and was in intensive care at the time.
